Refrigerant R-452A has gained wide acceptance for use in the transport cold chain as areplacement for R-404A because of its ability to be a direct design compatible replacement forR-404A. R-452A is nonflammable and its GWP (Global Warming Potential) is about half that ofR-404A which makes it a good interim replacement, but further greenhouse gas phasedownregulations starting in the early to mid-2020’s will require R-452A to be phased out as well.This paper provides a review of proposed and potential future refrigerants with less than 150GWP as suitable replacements for R-452A. A summary of thermodynamic properties and cycleperformance, along with flammability, stability, and toxicological properties is provided for avariety of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant blends. In addition,insights into the technological challenges to incorporate these low GWP substitutes and marketviability are provided by potential application area.
