Two crucial aspects for the design of the conductors for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) are critically reviewed. The role of the current sharing among strands for the stability of the cable-in-conduit conductors is emphasized and the attention is drawn on the role of the segregated copper w ires. The likely transient disturbance events, including cable movements and AC losses from plasma disruptions, are discussed and the associated energy input to the conductor is assessed in terms of the required temperature margins. The conclusions indicate the steps for an iteration in the conductor design.
