It is no doubt that one of the most useful approaches to enhance the brightness of kaolin clay is by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) technology, which has been adopted by a great number of kaolin clay plants. However, for less than 2 mu m kaolin clay, whether or not the technology can be applied is still uncertain. Maoming of Guangdon Province, China, boasts of plenty of superior kaolin clay, the geological reserve of which exceeds three-hundred-million tons. How to utilize comprehensively the resource to produce high class material for paper production is one of the important problems we should be involved. In this paper, the major factors affecting the removal of iron and improvement of brightness of ultra-fine kaolin clay are discussed in detail, and the feasibility of improvement of brightness of kaolin clay by superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (SHGMS) is also revealed.
