Analysis of US Preprototype Joint dc Performance

Evaluation of the US-ITER preprototype joint sample has recently conclued at the MIT Pulse Test Facility. Four approaches were used to evaluate the sample's zero field dc performance: voltage tap measurement, Hall probe and pick-up coil measurement of current density distribution, detailed electromagnetic modeling of the joint's dc resistance and helium flow calorimetry. Because of the joint's complex structure and the use of highly resistive materials, an exact value for the joint's resistance cannot be directly determined from the existing experimental data. The evaluations suggest a probable dc joint resistance in the range 4.5 approx 6.5 n OMEGA and roughly uniform current transfer across the middle 2/3 of the joint. The paper highlights special precautions that are necessary in the placement of voltage taps for future samples of this type to insure proper evaluation of joint resistance.
