A method is proposed for estimating the instantaneous clamp force exerted by an electromechanical brake from measurements of motor position and current. In contrast with previously reported techniques, the clamp-force estimation is performed during normal brake operation, without the need for calibration braking cycles or the insertion of additional excitation signals in the clamp-force command. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed estimator.
