The Hexi Corridor is situated in the west of Gansu Province, with distinctive ecological geographic features. Oases and the Goabi desert are distributed over the corridor, which has a low rainfall, an arid climate and a fragile ecological environment. The Qilian Mountain and the Aerjin Mountain are located in the south of the corridor, 3000M above sea level, which has growing modern glaciers and relatively abundant rainfall. It is the water resource forming area in the Hexi region. The Rongshou Mountain, the Heli Mountain and the Maxong Mountain are located in the north of the corridor. The corridor area is a flat plain bordered N and S by foothills of mountain ranges, The corridor stretches more than 1000 Kilometers from east to west. The water from the Qilian Mountain area has formed three mutually disjointed continental rivers, i. e. the Shiyang River basin, the Heihe River basin and Shule River basin, to irrigate a vast area of farmland and to supprt the development of several heavy industrial cities. The Hexi Corridor Area involves five administrative districts and cities, i. e. Wuwei District, Zhangye District, Jiuquan District, Jinchang City and Jiayuguan City. The total area of land is 274,000km~2 and is 60 per cent of the total area of Gansu Province. The population is about 4. 29 million and amounts to 17. 8 per cent of the population of the whole province,
