Driven by energy efficiency requirements and legal restrictions like F-Gas Regulation Heat Pump OEMsupplier are looking for alternative refrigerant solutions. HFO based low GWP refrigerants can help increasingthe system efficiency, expanding the operating temperature range while causing lowest CO2 emissions.A2L classified refrigerants provide extended application range at highest safety level versus A3 classifiedrefrigerants. But R-32 still carries a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 that can only be a transitionsolution.This paper compares the results of a testing campaign highlighting different relevant parameters and pointingout the advantages provided by HFO A2L low GWP refrigerants (like R-454B & R-454C) for a wide capacityrange of air to water and brine to water heat pumps. The importance of system re-design instead of drop-inreplacement is being revealed.
