National Aluminium Company Limited, set up in 1981 has today emerged as the largest producer and exporter of quality alumina and aluminium in the country. The company, as a part of its growth and diversification plans, has gone ahead in implementation of few projects for production of Alumina Chemical Products such as: specialty hydrates, specialty aluminas and detergent grade Zeolite (Zeolite-A). The ongoing projects are located at the Refinery Complex of NALCO and are at advance stage nearing completion. A considerable amount, 8-10% of the world total alumina production (which is about 4 million tpy) finds applications in the chemical segment are known as specialty aluminas and hydrates. The products have a good domestic as well as overseas market and the demand is likely to rise due to opening up of new areas of applications and industrialisation. The production statistics and technology for production of these products are closely guarded secrets , due to value addition involved in business of these products. Nalco with its in-house effort has developed many of these products at lab scale and further at pilot plant scale. With multistage production process, there are varieties of special alumina and hydrate products, which are produced by the major aluminium producers to meet the market requirement. The pilot plant of 600 tpy capacity is under production to develop and test market the products in different industrial segment such as: refractory, ceramics, abrasives, PVC, cable and various chemical sectors. This is followed by a commercial unit of 26,400 tpy capacity with state-of-the-art technology from USA to cover 27 grades of specialty alumina and hydrate products. The plant is likely to be commissioned towards December, 2001.
