Toward protecting global environment and saving natural resources,recent author’s researches using a laboratory reactor proved that hydrogen half substitute to bosh gas on reaction behavior of sinter under a blast furnace simulated condition could enhance both reduction and carburization,and improve softening melting behavior and so on.In this work focusing the carburization,influence of a trace of gaseous sulfur on carburization rate to pure iron (13x10x0.5mm size) in CO-H2 mixtures was examined in the range of temperatures 920-1100 °C using a thermobalance.A trace of gaseous sulfur in the gas mixtures decreased the carburization rate drastically with increasing their contents.The initial rates were analyzed based on the chemisorption equilibrium of sulfur atoms on the surface of iron.The carburization was found to proceed to a small extent dependently on temperature and gas composition even under sulfur saturated condition.Overall the condition of hydrogen half substitute provided the rates twice as high as the condition without hydrogen independently of the existence of sulfur.The rates tended to increase mostly with increasing temperatures.The results were discussed relating to the reactions inside a blast furnace with or without hydrogen half substitute to a basic bosh gas.
