Cu,P,Cr and Ni are generally added in the weather resistant steel for improving the atmospheric corrosion resistance.Weather resistant steel (SAILCOR) is regularly produced at Bokaro Steel Plant.The nominal chemistry is C:0.12%,Mn:0.35%,S:0.015%,P:0.10%,Si:0.50%,Cr:0.45%,Ni:0.32%,Cu:0.45% and Al:0.03%.This steel has been further microalloyed with Nb and V and controlled rolled 50-70 % at 800 and 900C after austenitisation at 1150°C in the laboratory.Controlled rolling has resulted in higher mechanical properties with YS:355-536 MPa,UTS:531-832 MPa and %El:16-28.The microstructure consists of fine ferrite-pearlite.Additionally,some of the samples which contain relatively more Nb and V have resulted in microstructures consisting of ferrite,pearlite and bainite also which are desirable for structural steels.The electrochemical corrosion performance of these steels in 3.5 % NaCl using Tafelpolarization and extrapolation technique,their complex plane Nyquist,Bode magnitude and Bode phase plots,exposure test in 5% salt fog for 98 days and estimation of the pore resistance of the rust coatings on these steels show significantly lower corrosion rates of microalloyed weather resistant steel samples than that of SAILCOR steel.
