The composition,type,amount,size and distribution of the inclusions in 439 ferritic stainless steel produced by the route of EAF-AOD-VOD-CC were investigated by optical microscope,scanning electron microscope and electrolysis of non-aqueous solution.The results showed that the main inclusions in 439 ferritic stainless steel in the slab are Al2O3,Ti(CN) and complex Ti(CN) inclusion with core of MgO-Al2O3 and TiOx.The total oxygen content in 439 ferritic stainless steel decreased gradually with the implementation of VOD refining and continuous casting,the average total oxygen content in slab is 24 ppm.The average diameter of the inclusion in slab is about 2.3 μm.The number proportion of inclusions with the diameter above 10μm is less than 0.4% of the total inclusions.Foreign inclusions are TiOx-Al2O3-MgO-SiO2 in size above 50 μm covered by Ti(CN).Although these inclusions are very few,they do harm to the surface quality of stainless steel.It is able to reduce the risk of forming this kind of inclusion by aluminium deoxidation with increasing Al content to restrain the formation of TiOx.In addition,the feasibility of calcium treatment during refining of 439 ferritic stainless steel was also discussed in the paper.
