Natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents in soil and groundwater

Monitored natural attenuation can be an effective method for the remediation of soil and groundwater when used in conjunction with other engineered systems or as a single remedial alternative. The selection of natural attenuation as part of any site remedy, however, should be based on its ability to achieve remediation goals in a reasonable timeframe. Under favorable geochemical conditions, natural attenuation of groundwater contaminants, which relies on the use of natural processes to remove or attenuate toxic compounds from the subsurface, can result in significant savings in cost over more intrusive remedial options. This paper addresses the major mechanisms of natural attenuation for chlorinated organics. Some experience in which the use of natural processes resulted in the reduction of plume size is also presented, where an appropriate field monitoring program was designed. In that case, source control measures were implemented to accelerate the overall remediation process.
