Domestic satellite services were introduced to Australia during the 1980s following the launch of the AUSSAT-A series satellites. The satellite system provides complete nationwide television coverage, with direct-to-home broadcasting for rural and remote areas, provides business with a range of economically competitive communications services, and provides diversity from the terrestrial infrastructure and security from labor disputes. In the 1990s a second generation of satellites will provide for services into the next century. A range of applications well suited to the unique coverage capabilities of the satellites, including mobile services and direct-broadcast satellite (DBS), will be provided for in addition to the current base services.
