Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is compact and highly efficient, so it is widely used as a motor for Electric Vehicles (EVs) drive. However, it does not mean there is no problem at all. Applying high voltage to obtain high torque increases torque ripple. We propose a new modulation for the inverter to drive the PMSM, Modified-Trapezoidal-Modulation (MTM). The greatest advantage of MTM is that it can realize the torque increase and the torque ripple reduction at the same time. In this paper, experiments were conducted to obtain the merits of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method generates increased torque comparing the result with other modulation techniques and confirmed that MTM reduces torque ripple by 9.27%.
