This paper proposes a novel method of speed estimation for variable-speed diesel-generator (genset) systems, where the speed of the genset is calculated from the back-EMF frequency of the generator. The back-EMF frequency is extracted from an output phase current. The proposed method is based on multiple and cascade second-order generalized integrators (MC-SOGIs) and separated frequency-locked loops (FLLs). As a result, although the phase currents of the generator connected with a diode rectifier contain high-order harmonics components, the proposed method can estimate the back-EMF frequency accurately with fast response and high stability. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed method.
