摘要

The performance of Sawdust Toilet (SDT) under the ordinary home use was tested by an experiment in the first author's house in Tokyo, Japan. SDT is expected to be a toilet proper to the sustainable society in the future, but there exists only few data for its use in a real situation. The aim of the experiment is not only to collect scientific data but also to examine the practical problems, including physical and psychological matters, for its use in the highly populated urban area in Tokyo. In the experiment, kitchen garbage was treated with human excreta in the toilet to achieve zero-emission of organic waste. SDT worked successfully during the period of nine months without any big problems, such as severe smell, much load for maintenance, complaint from families of neighbours, or much expense for running. This paper presents the physical data and some financial data obtained from measurements in the experiment with his wife's comments.
