Polymers in the family of thermoplastic polyesters, which are used in engineering thermoplastic applications usually, require a resistance to burning equal to a UL94 rating of V0. Compounders of both PET and PBT have achieved this rating using a combination of halogen containing flame retardant in combination with antimony oxide. This type of system because of its high density and small particle size can have a pronounced deleterious effect on the physical properties of the compounded polymer.
