Research was undertaken to develop an open source model that can be applied to activated sludgernsystems operated as Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs), in addition to other compact solutions such asrnIntegrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBRs). Thernmodel has been developed to operate with up to 12 cells (reactors) in series. The values of thernkinetic parameters for the model were developed from pilot scale activated sludge systems. Thernprocess configuration can be any combination of anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic, post anoxic with orrnwithout supplemental carbon, and reaeration or membrane cell; it can also include anyrncombination of step feed; the recycles include mixed liquor, RAS, nitrate and membrane bioreactorrnrecycles.rnThe model can be used in steady state and dynamic simulation modes. The dynamic simulationrnincludes hourly simulation at variable flows and loads over 24 hours; daily simulation duringrnwhich temperatures, MLSS MCRTs, reactor volume, operating DO levels and recycles can varyrnfrom day to day. It includes equations to size the MBR cell (footprint and volume) for normalrnflow and wet weather flows. The equations for the aeration process allow the user to evaluaternvarious DO levels in the aerobic zone and air scour on-time fractions for the membrane cell. Thisrnhelps apply the model to optimize the process and minimize the energy requirements in MBRs.
