A two-year study of the impact system scale has on short-term fouling rates and long-termrnmembrane performance was conducted. Four system scales; bench, module, cassette and plantrnwere used. Bench and module scale systems were found to be useful for evaluation ofrnalternative membrane designs and operational parameters. Plant scale testing was found to bernrequired for long-term performance validation. Monitoring of mixed liquor filterability atrndifferent system scales using colloidal TOC and time-to-filter revealed a tendency for smallersystemsrnto react more rapidly and drastically to sudden process changes.
