Since 1990 governmental regulations have driven changes in the sulfur content of transportation fuels. Tier 2 regulations put into place in December 1999 mandate a decrease in the level of sulfur in gasoline to 120 ppm by January 2004 and finally to 30 ppm by January 2006. The European Union has adopted even more stringent sulfur limits of 10 ppm now targeted to become effective in 2009. All of this comes at a significant cost to the refining industry. The National Petroleum Council has estimated that it will cost U.S. refiners alone $8 billion to meet the 30 ppm limit, primarily because of the limitations of existing commercial hydrotreaters. There is a clear need for processes that can more effectively and more economically remove sulfur from gasoline boiling range streams. Trans Ionics Corporation has developed a novel pervaporation process, called TranSep-S, that selectively removes sulfur species from naphtha streams for processing in existing non-selective hydrotreaters. These membranes exhibit high permeabilities at modest temperatures. What makes this process most remarkable is the unique and cost-effective manner in which the vacuum on the downstream side of the membrane is generated.
