Selectively permeable membranes are widely used throughout the chemical industry for carrying out gas separations, in the purification of water by reverse osmosis, and in medical applications. Work is underway to develop membranes suitable for novel use in lightweight clothing for protection against chemical and biological agents and toxic industrial chemicals. Selectively permeable membranes, which function without the use of a carbon adsorptive medium, have been developed and evaluated for their mechanical properties, barrier properties, and moisture vapor transport properties. Field durability and efficacy were assessed using prototype selectively permeable membrane based CB duty uniforms with possible results. The moisture vapor permeable, chemical/biological agent protective membrane based protective clothing strengths, limitations, and their potential applications will be discussed.
