摘要

All alligators inhabiting the Florida Everglades contain elevated levels of mercury within their tissues. The objective of this study was to determine the mercury bioconcentration factors (BCF) in alligator tissues based upon mercury concentrations in alligator tissue and in Everglades's waters. Data from studies on mercury concentrations in Everglades alligator tissue and waters were used to determine the mercury bioconcentration factors (BCF) in liver, kidney, muscle and tail scute. The BCF for juvenile and adult alligators were found to be very high. Liver and kidney BCFs arc the highest with values of 39.9 X l0~7 and 32.9 X l0~7, respectively, for adults and 10.5 X l0~7 and 9.34 X 10~7 for juveniles. Adults 7-14 years of age, living under the same conditions as juveniles, less than 4 years of age, contain approximately a 70% increase of mercury in their liver and kidney and a 50% increase in their muscle.
