Recent trend in the power distribution system is showing that the use of non-linear loads and devices will take a rising profile in days to come. This introduces harmonics in source side currents which degrades the power quality. Power utilities are very much concerned with this situation. The use of Shunt Active Power filters (SAPF) is one of the wellknown solutions. In this paper the reference compensating currents are generated using P-Q theory. The DC link capacitor voltage control is done using Fuzzy tuned Proportional Resonant (PR) controller. The capacitor plays the role of energy source element so its voltage control is a vital part in this scheme. The inverter used for SAPF is of Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Multilevel Inverter which in turn reduces the dv/dt stress on the devices and they can be operated with lower switching frequency resulting in lower switching losses. The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) obtained in this scheme is smaller than those obtained with other different controlling techniques available. The simulation results are analysed and justified which shows the usefulness of this strategy.
