A working pre-prototype of a rechargeable Nickel Oxyhydroxide-Zinc (commonly called Nickel-Zinc or Ni-Zn) thin film cell is described. This 20-μm thick cell is able to charge and discharge more than one hundred cycles without degradation. This system is based on an aqueous electrolyte, and is far less sensitive than lithium batteries to oxygen and moisture. In addition to being ultrathin and made entirely of a polymer, the battery has no separator between the anode and the cathode. It is based on an emerging nanotechnology for populating porous polymers films with well ordered metal nanotubes (MNT). This 20-μm-thin cell forms the basis for our new and emerging Thin Film Battery Technology or TFBT.
