Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are an economically important class of industrial chemicals, which are used as disinfectants, as surfactants, as anti-electrostatics (e.g. in shampoo), and as phase transfer catalysts. QACs were analyzed in influents and effluents of nine Austrian municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with different treatment techniques by means of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. All investigated substances are significantly removed during wastewater treatment. Removal occurs by adsorption to the sludge and biotransformation. Although QACs are known inhibitors for microorganisms, the removal capacity is not affected. In highly loaded plants as well as in lowly loaded plants comparable removal is observed.
