Public concern about the environmental impact of steroid estrogens has grown over the past decade due to their potential for disrupting endocrine systems of animals and humans. These compounds (natural steroid estrogens: estrone -E1; 17β-estradiol - E2; and estriol - E3; and synthetic steroid estrogen: 17α-ethinylestradiol - EE2) have been frequently detected at various levels in surface waters due to their incomplete removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
