Abstract: Recently, various kinds of multimedia applicationsystems have actively been developed based on theachievement of advanced high sped communicationnetworks, computer processing technologies, and digitalcontents-handling technologies. Under this background,this paper proposed a new distributed multimediadatabase system which can effectively perform a newfunction of cooperative retrieval among distributeddatabases. The proposed system introduces a new conceptof 'Retrieval manager' which functions as anintelligent controller so that the user can recognize aset of distributed databases as one logical database.The logical database dynamically generates and performsa preferred combination of retrieving parameters on thebasis of both directory data and the systemenvironment. Moreover, a concept of 'domain' is definedin the system as a managing unit of retrieval. Theretrieval can effectively be performed by cooperationof processing among multiple domains. Communicationlanguage and protocols are also defined in the system.These are used in every action for communications inthe system. A language interpreter in each machinetranslates a communication language into an internallanguage used in each machine. Using the languageinterpreter, internal processing, such internal modulesas DBMS and user interface modules can freely beselected. A concept of 'content-set' is alsointroduced. A content-set is defined as a package ofcontents. Contents in the content-set are related toeach other. The system handles a content-set as oneobject. The user terminal can effectively control thedisplaying of retrieved contents, referring to dataindicating the relation of the contents in the content-set. In order to verify the function of the proposedsystem, a networked electronic museum wasexperimentally built. The results of this experimentindicate that the proposed system can effectivelyretrieve the objective contents under the control to anumber of distributed domains. The result also indicatethat the system can effectively work even if the systembecomes large. !11
