In general, seashore and offshore areas are harsh environments for traditional piping materials. This situation is especially aggravated inrnthe Middle East because of fluctuating humidity and temperatures which, coupled with the arid environment, pose a high risk forrntraditional construction materials. Mitigation of this risk was found in hard plastics known as Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRP) andrncommonly referred to using various standard terms such as Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP), Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GFRP),rnReinforced Plastic Mortar (RPM) or Reinforced Thermoset Resin Plastic (RTRP). GRP is an amalgamation of resin and glass fibrernmanufactured using appropriate additives and treatment methods. It is a composite engineering material uniquely capable of meeting arnwide variety of specific process and end product requirements in various fluid transport applications. It has a combination of propertiesrngenerally not found in any other traditional or conventional material. These include an exceptionally high strength to weight ratio (smallrnthicknesses and high mechanical properties, withstands high pressures), superior corrosion resistance (no scaling and no pollutant buildup),rnmaintenance free, higher hydraulic efficiency (smaller sizes), light weight (lower transportation and installation costs), higherrnresistance to surge pressure (safer under the worst conditions due to its low modulus of elasticity), best joining systems, excellentrnworkability and design flexibility.rnTo date, AMIANTIT has carried out various types of offshore projects using GRP piping for intake and outfall lines. The Group hasrncompleted the design and supply of intake lines in diameters from 700 mm to 4,000 mm for more than 54 projects along the Red Searnand the Arabian Sea. The installation types varied, including under the seabed, on the seabed, supported on piers suspended in thernseawater and on mobile platforms or barges. They were all unique in nature and posed entirely different in design and manufacturingrnchallenges.rnThis paper will describe the design concepts and the flexibility involved in all 5 types of project, which are unique to their application,rnalong with case histories and details.
