Faecal bacteria can enter the coastal water after a sewage overflow event that can occur during intense rainfall events. Usually thesernoverflow locations are situated in harbours, rivers or canals, that can be tide-dependent. The faecal plume will disperse along the coastalrnzone that includes recreational swimming areas and could cause a potential health hazard. The Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM)rnmonitors the water quality of bathing areas at the Belgian Coastline. Water samples are collected and analysed in the laboratory, whichrntakes 24-48 hours to process. During this time the bathers may be exposed to a potential health risk. Therefore, this hindcast systemrnshould be supported by a smart forecast system to predict potential faecal contamination in these bathing areas in advance.rnInternational Marine and Dredging Consultants (IMDC) developed a beach water quality prediction tool for the Flemish EnvironmentalrnAgency (VMM). An important aspect of this study was the set-up of a numerical hydrodynamic model of the coastal zone that simulatesrnthe dispersal of faecal bacteria. A 3-dimensional hydrodynamical model of the harbour and coastal zone was set up and calibrated tornsimulate tidal currents and sea-harbour exchange flows. The influence of tidal phase, tidal amplitude, decay rate and spill size on thernplume geometry was investigated. This sensitivity analysis identifies the most important governing factors that influence the plumerndispersion at the Belgian Coastline. A webtool integrating this knowledge is used to predict when and where beach water quality couldrnbe compromised after a particular event. Currently three harbours at the Belgian coast are investigated (Nieuwpoort, Oostende,rnBlankenberge). The final tool should be used together with on-site measurements of water quality. It helps to understand therntransportation paths of faecal bacteria towards the beaches and will assist decision makers in reacting swift and focussed to thesernpotentially harmful events.
