Office Cherifien de Phosphates (OCP) in Morocco, uses a process for phosphate production at the Jorf Lasfar phosphate plant, thatrnresults in a large quantity of gypsum and warm seawater (temperature of around 30° C) waste, which needs to be disposed off. Thernphosphate plant will be greatly expanded over the next few years, leading to an increase in quantity of gypsum slurry and waste warmrnseawater thus necessitating the construction of further offshore diffusers for disposal.rnAim of the project was to discard the existing outfalls and replace them with offshore dispersal at a distance up to 3 km, in order torncomply with modern environmental standards. Under this scope an outfall is designed using a new network of onshore pipes,rnsubmerged pipes and an array of diffusers.rnThe design gypsum slurry outflow rates disposed to the outfall pipelines vary from 14.4 m3/s for the existing factories at the presentrnstage, up to 25.6 m3/s at the end of the first work stage. The total gypsum slurry and waste seawater flow after development of all futurernfactories will reach an ultimate of 48.4 m3/sec, consisting of 30.1 m3/sec gypsum slurry that will be directed to the offshore pipelines.rnThe pipelines are constructed of solid wall HDPE PE100 pipes with a SDR of 26. The main part of the pipelines are constructed of pipesrnwith OD 1800mm and t=69,1 mm, resulting to an inner diameter of 1653 mm. The three pipelines that will be discharging in the firstrnphases of operation measure lengths from tie in flanges: 1820m, 2195m and 2570m respectively. A diffuser section 375 long constructedrnalso of HDPE pipes is included in the above lengths. Each diffuser has a total length of 375 and is constructed of pipes with reducingrndiameter, OD 1800mm / 1600mm / 1400mm / 1200mm and 710mm. Fifteen (15) vertical risers OD 560mm are provided at each diffuserrnevery 25m along the diffuser length.rnPipelines are exposed to severe wave energy originating from the Ocean; therefore an accurate estimation of the near shore wavernprocesses based on high quality wave and wind data acquired from a commercial database was necessary. The extreme wave eventsrnused for design purposes have a return period of 500 resulting to offshore wave heights of 11.68m to 7.13m for the critical W-NW sector.rnThe mathematical model MIKE21 NSW was used for wave propagation to the near shore.rnFor protection against the onerous wave action, pipelines are provided buried within a trench and protected against hydrodynamic loadsrnvia flexible concrete mattresses along the surf zone, i.e. up to –14.0m MSL. Pipeline routing is continued with pipes placed exposed onrnseabed and concrete ballast blocks of sufficient weight are provided in order to ensure pipeline stability.
