Playout systems that originate linear televisionrnprogramming are often built with 1:1 redundancy for obviousrnreasons. The most common architecture involves buildingrntwo completely redundant ‘chains’ so that all automation,rnvideo, audio processing, graphics, closed captioning andrnstorage servers, etc. have a hot backup in the event of arnfailure. Both redundant chains are usually identical and arernoperated synchronously so that either the ‘A’ or ‘B’ chainrncan be taken to air at any time. This generally works well, butrnthere are limitations. For example, determining whatrnconstitutes a fault is not always obvious, which means thatrnhuman intervention is required on a 24x7 basis, andrnhardware redundancy does not always protect againstrnsoftware failures. This session will explore how multiplerndiverse TV program playout architectures can bernsynchronized to provide slipless redundancy for bothrnhardware and software failure, as well as automatedrnmonitoring by exception.
