Nanotechnology is the study, measurement, and manipulation of structures between 1 and 100 nm in size for the development of materials, devices, and systems with fundamentally new properties and functions. (1, 2) Since the implementation of the National Nanotechnology Initiatiative in 2001, nanotechnology has been one of the fastest growing areas of international research and development. (5) Nearly 10 billion dollars have been allotted to the National Nanotechnology Initiative since its inception in 2001, and it is estimated that upwards of $1.4 billion dollars will be spent on research and education efforts in nanotechnology in 2008 alone, increasing to over S1.5 billion in 2009. (4) By 2015, it is projected that more than 7 million jobs in the global market could be affected by nanotechnology.
