This paper introduces the current status and specialrnfeatures of wind resistant design of tall buildings inrnJapan. It describes the Building Standard Law of Japanrn(BSLJ) and Recommendations for Loads on Buildingsrnpublished by the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ-RLB).rnIt also introduces details of the new version ofrnthe AIJ-RLB (to be published in March 2004). One ofrnthe most significant revisions is the introduction ofrnwind directional factor to realize more rational andrneconomic design of tall buildings, which was difficultrnin tropical-cyclone-prone regions. As a result, therncombined effects of along-wind, crosswind andrntorsional forces become more significant for precisernestimation of wind loads. These are also introducedrnclearly in the provisions of the AIJ-RLB. Some otherrnrelevant design issues such as wind environmentalrnproblems for pedestrians, habitability under vibrationsrnfor building occupants, design damping values, andrndamping devices are also discussed.
