This paper details the development of the new CISC documents for specifying Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel(AESS)in Canada.It includes a Sample Specification,a new Appendix to the CISC Code of Standard Practice, a Category Matrix and a Guide for specifying AESS.The initiative focused on the creation of a Category Matrix which is used to define four categories of AESS to assist in specifying AESS by clarifying design,fabrication, erection and finish issues.The Cateories range from the exposed IKEA roof structure(AESS1)to high-end airport fa?ades(AESS4).It builds upon what AISC has developed.The paper also outlines the specific technical Characteristics that accompany each of the Categories.It emphasizes the importance of communication between Architect,Engineer and Fabricator to achieve the desired“Form,Fit,Function and Finish”that characterizes Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel.
