Petroleum reserves of the world are limited. Indigenous petroleum reserves are meagre. Plenty of coal reserves are available in India. Indian coals have major advantage over petroleum in having low sulphur (<0.6percent) contents. However, Indian coals contain larger amounts of ash (5 to 45percent). Research work in the authors' laboratory has resulted in the development of a process of organo-refining of coal, wherein, coal is subjected to refining by using a super solvent which is a commercial solvent containing catalytic amount of another (commercial) solvent. The organo-refining results in obtaining the super clean coal (SCC). The SCC was found to contain 0.3-0.5percent ash contents. Studies were conducted on free swelling index (FSI) test for coking of SCC. The SCC was found to show good coking properties. The coke obtained may be used in steel or aluminium industries. Studies on the graphitization of SCC are being planned.
