Imported petroleum needle coke was pulverised, mixed with suitable binder pitch and extruded as green rods. These green rods were carbonised at 900 deg C in a laboratory carbonising furnace in a protected atmosphere. These carbonised rods were heat treated at 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600, 2800 deg C in resistance type tube furnace in nitrogen atmosphere. After heat treatment the samples were determined for specific resistance values. Further, these rods were crushed to -200 mesh powder and subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis for structural studies and degree of graphitisation. It was observed that the carbon body changed to graphite between 2700 deg C to 2800 deg C or at specific resistance values of around 107.5 x 10~(-5) ohm-cm.
