Preparation of Nickel Hydroxide Using Electroless Technique

Rechargeable batteries have found many applications during these days due to the development in electronic industry. In this paper an attempt is made to prepare nickel hydroxide by electroless technique using different complexing agents. Nickel hydroxide prepared by using tri-ethanol amine and ammonia solutions shows high discharge capacity value. The samples were prepared using Ni(NO_3)_2 solution, complexing agent and 80% potassium hydroxide solution. These samples were filtered and dried in an oven at 50℃ for 2 hours after aging for 72 hours in mother liquor. The particle size of the samples are found to be in between 4 μm to 20 μm. The charge-discharge characteristics were studied by making pellets of nickel hydroxide and using it as a working electrode in 30% KOH Solution. Two cadmium hydroxide pellets were used as the counter electrodes and Hg/HgO (6MKOH) was used as a reference electrode. Some of the samples are showing discharge capacity more than 230 mAh/g. All the samples are analysed for their physico-chemical properties by XRD, TG-DTA and SEM.
