Kinetics of Leaching of Reduced Bangladesh Ilmenite in Sulphuric Acid Solutions

Ilmentie separated from the beach sands of Bangladesh and containing 24.2 per cent FeO, 33.0 per cent Fe_2O_3 and 39.5 per cent TiO_2 has been reduced in the as received in the as received condition by charcoal for a period of 4 hours at 1050 C. The reduced mass has then been leached in the temperature range of 30 - 75℃ for periods of up to 90 minutes in 1.6 - 2.4 sulphuric acid solutions. Leaching was carried out in a three-necked round-bottom flask fitted with a re-flex condenser. Heating was done by placing the flux on a thermostatically controlled hot-plate. During leaching the solution was continuously stirred by magnetic stirrer. The dissolution of iron was determined by pippeting out 10 ml of suspension from the flux at predetermined time-intervals, filtering out the insoluble residue and chemically analysing the supernatant solution for iron content. All the chemicals used were of analytical grade. Concentrated sulphuric acid was diluted to the desired concentration with distilled water. The effects of time, temperature and the concentration of acid in the leaching solution has been investigated. Attempts have also been made to identify the reaction mechanism and to determine and Arrhenius activation energy for the reaction.
