The present paper describes the causes of stress corrosion cracking in low carbon steels and 304L stainless steel in a medium of aqueous magnesium chloride and sea water. The effect of tensile stress level, temperature of the medium on the rate of propagation of corrosion cracks is evaluated using standard Unisteel stress corrosion testing machine (U.K.). The micro structure evaluation during stress corrosion cracking in SS is discussed. The stages of stress corrosion cracking are also highlighted in this work.
