Evaluation of the Properties of Fly Ash and Its Influences on the Strength of Cement Mortar

In the present study, properties of fly ash have been evaluated with respect to its influences on the strength giving properties of blended cement mortar. Chemical composition, fineness modulus and grain size distribution of raw fly ash were determined. It mainly contains SiO_2 and minor amount of alumina, iron oxide, lime etc. Residual carbon content of the ash is 4.6%. Standard sand mortar cubes were prepared in 1:3 ratio of cement (containing 15% fly ash) : sand. Compressive strength of the cubes were determined after 3,7 and 28 days normal curing under water and 2,4 and 8 hours of autoclaving respectively. Initial compressive strength of the mortar cubes decreases with the fly ash addition but strength increases with the duration of autoclaving. Variation of strength is mainly due to the variation of porosity and phases developed upon curing in the samples.
