India being a developing country, is taking up development projects in various sectors aiming at better life and economic upliftment of the people. Water resources development including hydropower development is a major component in this direction. Besides contributing to the increased agricultural production and hydel power generation, these projects have also provided various other benefits such as drinking water, navigation facilities industrial requirements, recreational facilities and overall economic development etc. Hydro-electric projects are the backbone of the country as far as power generation is concerned and are contributing for about 27 per cent of the total power requirement of the country. 22674 MW of clean and cheap hydro-power is generated at present.
