Spread spectrum methods are used in communication systems to provide a low probability of intercept in hostile environments and multiple access capability in systems shared by many users as well as to provide high processing gain in channels where the transmitted signal is distorted by multipath effects. Such systems serve to be an effective tool for underwater telemetry environments, where multipath propagation effect is seen to be more predominant. This paper describes the development of a spread spectrum underwater telemetry system centered on a computer based signal processor.
