Soil, surface water, and groundwater at more than 100 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sites are radioactively and chemically contaminated from past nuclear and chemical research, production, and disposal activities. Safely managing the contaminated materials is a priority, and risk assessment plays a key role in identifying appropriate solutions that will ensure long-term health and environmental protection. The risk assessments must consider multiple contaminants, media, exposures, receptors, and time frames. Initial steps are being taken to develop mixtures assessments for these sites, focusing on linked conceptual models and screening approaches.
