Scientific, political, and community organizations working to develop and implement environmental programs often use a broad definition of environmental risk assessment that encompasses human health and welfare considerations as well as ecological risks. The risk assessment process continues to mature and is finding ever-wider applications in the regulatory and policy arenas for environmental protection. The technical challenges of characterizing and modeling the environmental behavior and biological action of chemicals in living systems have been a main focus of the ecological risk assessment process. Human-related issues that address health and the sociopolitical context are addressed in extensive parallel processes, including human health and safety risk assessments.
