New independent states that appeared in the Caspian region had to speedily develop their economies. The basis for this was development of hydrocarbons of the Caspian Sea, which resources, as it was predicted, were tremendous. Development of hydrocarbons can aggravate the very complicated environmental situation in the Caspian region. Oil is considered a major pollution source. Environmental consequences are grouped by natural elements of the Caspian basin (the sea, coastal territories and river flow into the sea) and by technologies of oil production and transportation.
