Two genes from Chloroflexus aurantiacus were reported to code for the protein synthase which catalizes the esterification of bacteriochlorophyllide to bacteriochlorophyll. One gene, bchG, is located near genes coding for proteins associated with the bacterial reaction center, whereas the other, bchG2, is clustered with two genes coding for proteins associated with the antenna system. Lopez et al. suggested, that the first one codes for the bacteriochlorophyllide a esterifying synthase and the second one codes for the synthase that esterifies the light-harvesting pigments, i.e. bacteriochlorophyllide c.
