Generally two types of proteolysis can be distinguished in the chloroplast: (i) protein processing which involves cleavage of signal sequences during protein import into organelles, and (ii) destructive proteolysis which leads to loss of particular proteins from various chlroplast compartments. While the physiological substrates for the first type of proteolysis can be easily defined, the substrates degraded by the latter on are more complex and can be divided into three major classes.
