For many applications it is essential to produce otpical materials with excellent quality of the surface the adjacent layer. Non-destructive characterisation of the regions is difficult, however recent measurements of surface second harmonic generation clearly indicate htat this is a viable technique. It has excellent potential, not only for non-linear materials such as LiNbO_3, but also other insulators such as Nd:YAG. The technique will be discussed and compared with other probe methods, such as cathodoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, chemical etching, waveguide absorption or luminescence, waveguide laser thresholds, and thermoluminescence. The possibility of a generally applicable new route to removal of stress and dislocations produced during polishing will be reported.
