The River Management Decision Support System (RIMDESS) is an approach to managing water quality using a computerized data integration and modeling tool. RIMDESS integrates databases on instream water quality,dischargers, pollutant loads, regulatory standards, hydrologic structure, and treatment costs and an array of programs for analyzing these data. Users can evaluate the water quality and economic impacts of management options for controlling emissions from point sources and nonpoint source runoff. This paper briefly describes steps in the approach, applications in ten countries, and lessons learned.
