This article presents an outline of general Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) principles in relation to Ukrainian water resources; using two extensive case studies. The author describes the EIA of large hydrological schemes in the Ukraine together with methods for conducting environmental impact assessments of hydro-technical projects. It is proposed that EIA procedures be used for water quality control. The compilation of data will enable the solution of analogous problems of water resources elaswhere.
